BRABIN SHIELD TOURNEY

OTAGO AND AUCKLAND LOSE

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 29. Wellington beat Otago by 10 wickets, and Canterbury, after being 40 runs behind in the first innings, beat Auckland outright by three wickets in the first series of matches in the Brabin Shield cricket tournament at I’ilbirnie today.

Though Otago gave a much improved batting display in its second innings, with J. R. Veitch shaping well for 55, and N. R. Thompson and S. G. McKnight making useful contributions. Wellington was left with only 25 runs to get for an outright decision, and accomplished this easily. For Wellington P. Tarrant bowled well.

Canterbury’s win over Auckland was a meritorius one, and provided an exciting finish. Forty runs behind in the first innings, Canterbury attacked with enthusiasm, and Auckland at one stage had eight wickets down for 69 runs. Then G. Chambers and A. Campbell made a determined stand, but the innings closed for 108 runs.

A. Duckmanton and J. Reeves bowled with plenty of life. Needing 148, Canterbury had to fight hard. Six wickets were down for 118,'but a seventh-wicket stand ensured victory by three wickets. Canterbury went on to complete its innings for 211 runs. The second series of matches will be begun tomorrow at Kilbirnie, and the finals will be played on Friday and Saturday at the Basin Reserve.
