The Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr J. T. Watts, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the new judge of the Supreme Court, Mr Justice McGregor. Mr Watts returned to Welfi r ? ate in lhe afternoon. With Mrs Watts he will return to Christchurch on January 18 to be in the city for the visit of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Lieutenant-Colonel J. R. Williams, D. 5.0., of Christchurch, has been appointed an honorary aide-de-camp to the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie). The appointment, gazetted last night, runs from December 1, 1953, to March 31, 1954. Two other Christchurch servicemen have had their appointments as honorary aides-de-camp extended until March 31, 1954. Thev John N - Allan, V.R.D. R.N.Z.N.V.R., and Squadron Leader R* J. N. Archibald, D-F.C. (F.0.0.R.)
Mr Ross Taylor, of Christchurch, has passed the final examination for a doctorate of philosophy at Indiana University Mr Taylor graduated M.Sc., with first-class honours in geology, winning the Von Haast prize at Canterbury University College in 1951, and left later in the year on a scholarship to Indiana University. He is the second son of Mrs A. J. Taylor Roker street. Christchurch, formerly of Wakanui, Ashburton, and the late Mr T. S. Taylor.
Mr V- Kay, of the Department of Maori Affairs, Auckland, has been appointed Judge of the High Court and of the Native Land Court of the Cook Islands. From 1935 to 1938 Mr Kay was in Samoa as Commissioner of the High Court, Crown Solicitor, and Crown Prosecutor. About 1946 he was appointed assistant solicitor in the head office of the Lands and Survey Department, and later joined the Department of Maori Affairs in Auckland.—(P.A.) ' It is announced by Canterbury University College that, subject ,to confirmation by the Universftv of New Zealand. Mr R. B. Atkins ’fias gained his master of arts degree with firstclass honours in Latin.
Pilot Officers R. P. Mannings (Christchurch) and M. F. Old (Feilding) were presented with their pilot’s badges by Wing Commander S. G. Quill, D.F.C., officer commanding the Flying Wing at the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Wigram, on Wednesday. Pilot Officer Mannings will leave soon for the United Kingdom to serve in the R.A.F. and Pilot Officer Old will remain in the R.N.Z.A.F.
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. Woods, a member of the Halswell County Council for 12 years, was carried at- yesterday’s meeting of the council.
