THE NATIONAL ORCHESTRA
SELECTION OF NEXT CONDUCTOR COMMITTEES FORMED IN N.Z. AND OVERSEAS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. December 17. The Minister in charge of Broadcasting (Mr R. M. Algie) today announced the setting-up of committees in New Zealand and overseas to guide him in the appointment of a conductor of the National Orchestra to succeed Mr Warwick Braithwaite. Mr Braithwaite’s interim appointment will end in August, and the Minister hopes to be able to replace him at that date. The members of the New Zealand committee are Professor H. Holiinrake
and Mr Julius Hogben, of Auckland. Mr Stanley Oliver, of Wellington. Mr C. Foster Browne, of Christchurch. Professor V. E. Galway, of Dunedin, and Mr Braithwaite. With them will be associated the Director of Broadcasting (Mr W. Yates) and the Assist-ant-Director (Mr J. H. E. Schroder). This committee. Mr Algie said, before making its report and recommendation, would consider with all applications received in New Zealand the greater number received in Sydney and London and the confidential reports on them received from committees set up there. In London. Mr C. B. McNair, the British Broadcasting Corporation’s overseas music organiser, and Mr Eric Warr, assistant head of music programmes, were acting with Sir James Shelley. formerly New Zealand’s
Director of Broadcasting, and Dr. R. M. Campbell, Official Secretary in the High Commissioner’s Office. In Australia, Mr William James, the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s director of music, had accepted the central responsibility, and Sir Bernard Heinze and Dr. Edgar L. Bainton had agreed to act as his consultants.
