War Pension Increase
Disapproval of the statement by the president of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association (Sir Howard Kippenberger) that the Government had “seen the light” by granting an increase in the basic war pension recently, was expressed at a meeting at Dunedin of the , Second N.Z.E.F. Association’s Dominion standing committee. A resolution was passed expressing concern at Sir Howard Kippenberger’s “complacency” and the hope that his remarks did not reflect the views of R.S.A. branches generally. “It is obvious that the Government in fact has not seen the light about the reasonable representations of ex-servicemen,” it added. “The increase granted showed nothing more than a disturbing tendency to ally war pensions more closely to ordinary social security benefits.”—(P.A.)
