BOXING
GERALD DREYER LEAVES FOR N.Z. (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 17. The chairman of the Wellington Boxing Association (Mr T. G. Taylor) said today that the British Empire welter-weight boxing champion, Gerald Dreyer, left New York by aeroplane today, and would arrive at Auckland on Sunday, accompanied by his trainer, for his Empire title bout with Barry Brown on January 15. Mr Taylor said that Dreyer’s manager, W. Ketchum, would not accompany the South African. Dreyer would undoubtedly miss the services of Ketchum, who has managed three world champions, and is at present manager of the world lightweight champion, J. Carter. RUDOLPH DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, Dec. 17. The Auckland middle-weight boxer, Tommy Rudolph, was discharged from the Hastings Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital this afternoon. He had been a patient in the hospital since being knocked out in the tenth round of a 12-round catchweight contest with the New Zealand welter-weight champion, Barry Brown, in Hastings on the night of December 3. He was admitted after he“failed to regain consciousness in the ring after being knocked out. Rudolph is 23 and has had 20 professional bouts. When Brown knocked him out it was the first time he had been knocked off his feet as a professional.
Rudolph will return to Auckland tomorrow.
