BELFAST RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
REQUESTS TO WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL Letters from the Belfast Residents’ Association provoked argument at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council. After the first letter, dealing with the council’s refuse collection hours in Belfast, has been read, Cr. A. R. Blank asked: “Are they a properly constituted body? They seem to meet every day. How many members have they?” Cr. W. E. Cassidy, the Belfast member, replied: “They meet no more often than any golf club. They are a properly constituted body, like any golf club, and have 150 members.” The residents, in their concluding letter, said they were willing to meet the council and express their views personally. The letters were received. “If they come here it will be a slight on the member,” said Cr. H. J. Reynolds. Cr. Blank: If, at the end of the term they are not satisfied with their member, they will change him. Cr. Cassidy, replying to Cr. Blank, said: “My work keeps me busy. I am in Belfast for 24 hours a week.” Mr F. W. Walter, the chairman, saidl “We have received many requests from Belfast. I think if they came here, however, it would be a slight on the member.” He moved that the residents should approach the riding member and discuss the matters with him.
