A LANDLADY’S PROBLEM
Sir.—l am a landlady and have 10 boarders. When the Arbitration Court sat I gave them to uirferstand there would be a board increase from September 15, but that they did not need to pay it until they got their back pay wage increase. Two weeks ago I told them It would be raised from £3 to £3 10s, and some have refused to pay it. What is my position? I could dismiss them and get plenty more at £4 a week, but do not like to be harsh. They get three cooked meals a day, flasks of tea and lunch for smoko and supper every night. Could you enlighten me the best course to take?—Yours, etc., TORY LANDLADY. December 16, 1953.
