AID TO PRIVATE HOSPITALS
STATE SUBSIDIES INCREASED OPERATION FROM DATE OF WAGE INCREASE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 17. The limits of the special subsidies paid to private hospitals are to be increased by 3s 2d an occupied bed a day. The Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Marshall), who announced this today, said the increase would operate from September 15. Operating costs of private hospitals would, it was estimated, be increased by this amount as a result of the recent general wage order, said Mr Marshall.
Further study was being, given to the whole question of financial assistance to private hospitals by the finance committee of the Cabinet, he said. The increase in the subsidy, however, was intended to give immediate relief while the wider question of maintenance and development of private hospitals was being studied.
The subsidy scheme available to hospitals experiencing financial difficulty was introduced in 1950. It provides for subsidies as follows:—maternity hospitals, up to 30s a confinement; medical and surgicaj hospitals, up to 6s 9d an occupied bed a day; and medical and convalescent hospitals, up to 5s 3d an occupied bed a day.
