SOUTH CANTERBURY’S GIFT FOR QUEEN

NEEDLEWORK PICTURE OF MOUNT COOK (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARV. December 15. When the Queen visits Timaru next January, the people of South Canterbury will give her- a needlework picture in petit.point of. Mount Cook. The picture has been made by Mrs R. J. Comrie. wife of the engineer to the TimaFu City Council. It was painstakingly copied from a painting of Mount Cook by Duncan Darroch. a New Zealand artist. . , Last night Mrs Comrie handed Over the completed picture to the Timaru City Council. It has taken her nearly 10 months to complete, and it contains 134.500 stitches. Mrs Comrie faced a number of difficulties, chiefly of obtaining sufficient shades to match those ,in the original painting. After exhausting the range in the Dominion, she sent for the complete range of wools held by the Royal School of Needlework. London. Even these were not enough, and many hours of careful blending of shades went into the finished picture. Hundreds Of different shades have been used. More than a dozen were employed to achieve the cloud effect of the picture, and the illusion Of sunlight on snow was gained by the clever use Of pink, blue, yellow and green shadings. Silks have been used in the picture as well as wools. The picture itself, now framed in a glassless. Continental frame of pale gold, measures 18in by 14in. On a silver plate at the foot of picture is inscribed: “MouttCCook. 12349 feet, South Canterbury, New Zealand.”
