FREEHOLDERS’ RIGHTS
Sir,—Apparently, “Facing Facts” is the only correspondent to recognise the basic facts of this problem. No man can live without land; therefore, no man has a right to the exclusive ownership of what is provided by Nature as a necessity of life. What man creates should be the property of him who creates it; but land, like air and sunshine, is th£ common property of all. These things, with security of tenure, relief from crippling taxation and other advantages, may be secured by adopting the plans of Henry George, as outlined in his books ‘ Progress and Poverty” and “The Condition of Labour.” New Zealand is well situated for the introduction of a “single tax” system and would then be the envy of the world.—Yours, etc., W. A. CALWELL. November 20, 1953.
