NEW SCHOOL FOR CUST
PERMISSION TO BUILD GRANTED
The Canterbury Education Board has received permission to rebuild the old Cust school. It is hoped the board will be able to call for tenders in February. This was announced by the chairman of the board (Mr S. J. Irwin) at yesterday’s meeting. In response to a request from the Cust School Committee, the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) received a deputation at the school on July 29. after which he inspected the school and later conferred with Mr Irwin and the board’s secretary (Mr L. S. P. Butcher). Later he announced his intention of taking steps tu find a solution to the difficulties experienced at the school. The school, consisting of three rooms, was erected in 1879. and a fourth room added in 1883. This room, because it was in fairly bad repair, was demolished in 1946, when a partial remodelling of the two larger classrooms was also carried out. Over the years the school roll has grown to the present 95, and it has become necessary to use the third room in the building, which had previously been condemned as being unfit for use as a classroom. The condition of the rest of the building is also poor. The new building 'to be erected will replace these three rooms.
