METHODIST CHURCH AT BLACKSPOINT
80TH ANNIVERSARY TOMORROW
The Blackspoint Methodist Church, near Reefton. will celebrate its eightieth anniversary with a jubilee service tomorrow and a social function on Monday evening. The church was founded by Cornish miners, and the first services were conducted, by laymen in a shop building. The first minister was the Rev. John Pendray, who arrived in 1873 to take charge at Reefton and Blackspoint.
A church was built in 1876, and part of this structure is embodied in the present church. The church was also, used as a primary school until a school building was built. A Sunday school was started, and at one time had 150 pupils on its roll. The church is now worked from Reef ton, where the Rev. A. R. Mead is minister. Mr Mead will conduct the jubilee service.
