ADDINGTON MARKET

SEVERAL PRICE FALLS

Butchers Require Less Beef BIG YARDING OF STORE SHEEP There was the largest yarding of store sheep for many months at the Addington stock market yesterday. The best hoggets sold very well but medium sorts were cheaper. Wethers formed the bulk of the adult store sheep entry and here again best sorts sold strongly with other classes cheaper. In the fat sheep section both wether and ewe prices declined. Best wethers were back 5s or 6s and medium quality and light-weight wethers were selling only at about store Tates. Medium quality and over-fat ewes were 6s to 8s easier. Butchers’ requirements of beef appeared to be smaller than usual and prices for fat cows and steers, which were yarded in large numbers, fell by at least £2 a head. Values for heifers were firm on recent sales. The store cattle yarding was poor. Yesterday’s sale was the first for a fortnight. No sale was held last week because of the Metropolitan Show. STORE SHEEP 'Riis week’s entry of store sheep was the largest for many months. The tptal yarding was 5777, including 3038 hoggets and 2739 adult sheep, compared with 4231 (2701 hoggets and 1530 adult sheep) last week. The hogget market opened on a much easier note, with prices 4s to 5s below late rates for wether hoggets out of the

wool, but as the sale progressed the mar. ket recovered a part of the drop to be about 2s below the last sale on the average, with medium to plain quality showing the biggest decline. Best shorn wether hoggets made from 60s to 64s «d, good 52s 64 to 59s 6d. and others down to 445. The only line of woolly wether hoggets on offer made 82s 6d. A selection of outstanding ewe hoggets out of the wool ranged from £5 7s to £5 19s: good sorts made from 84s; and others sold down to 525.

A line of 63 early shorn wether hoggets fetched 64s 6d, and 76 halfbreds made 625. R. W. Mackay (Darfield) realised 82s 6d for 49 wether hoggets still in the wool. Two hundred and ten big shorn Romney ewe hoggets from the south were sold at from £5 7s to £5 19s. The adult sheep entry consisted very largely of wethers of from very good to average quality. The best of the offering sold strongly at values fully firm to a shade firmer, but medium quality sorts were at least 2s to 3s cheaper. Where early shorn wethers were showing some new wool the demand was keener.

There was a further large line of one and two-shear halfbred wethers from the Win terslow station. They had been shorn 12 weeks ago and were said to be sound in the feet. For 587 prices ranged from 44s to 555. Six woolly one and twoshear wethers from Mrs M. E. Good (Rekerangu) sold at 78s. Early shorn two-shear wethers from G. Harold Parsons (Ward) sold to 67s for 635. The same vendor sold another 66 at 645, and the, estate of J. M. D. Parsons (Ward) sold 40 of the same age at 65s 6d. R. 3. Northeote (West Melton) received from 53s 6d to 63s for shorn two and threeshears numbering 215. G. Harold Parsons also sold 41 three-shear at 66s 6d. end a line of 38 two, three and four-shear from Derrett Bros. (Hororata) sold at 555.

There was a limited selection of ewes and lambs of varied quality. A good line of 106 woolly ewes and 115 lambs so’d at 595. Most of the other ewes With lambs were shorn, and they sold at from 33s 6d to 43s 6d all counted. Big two-shear shorn ewes from F. G. Early (Greendale) made from 67s to 73s for 126. SPRING LAMBS Only 53 spring lambs came forward, compared with 210 at the last sale. With the sharp decrease in numbers values appreciated* by 4s a head to recover the drop recorded at the last sale. Values were generally on a par with rates ruling at earlier spring sales. The top price was 71s Id paid for the best of 18 from H. S. Criglington (Sefton), and others sold down to 63s Id. - FAT HOGGETS The fat hogget entry was 1023, compared with 1119 a fortnight ago. Most of the entry came forward in prime condition, and there was a sound demand. Values for all classes of sheep were generally firm on recent rates. The top price for shorn hoggets was 75s 7d for 10 from Joseph Brooks (Brookside). Woolly hoggets made to 86s Id. Best shorn hoggets made to 75s 7d, good 64s Id to 67s Id, medium 59s Id to 63s Id, and light down to 52s Id. Representative sales were:—

FAT SHEEP

sheep entry was 3616. compared with 4231 at the last sale. The wether market opened 2s to 3s below late rates for best quality, and as the sale progressed it receded still further. On the whole best wethers were 5s to 6s easier. For medium quality, and particularly light-weight wethers, the demand was very slack, and values for this class were about on a par with store wethers. There was a sound sale for light-weight ewes, which sold about on a par with late rates, but medium quality and overrat e wes met a dragging sale and were 6s to 8s cheaper. Over the whole sale there was a dragging tendency, and there were frequent passings.

FAT CATTLE The entry of fat cattle totalled 591 head, compared with 695 at the previous sale. Butchers appeared to have smaller requirements than usual, with the result that prices receded. Cow beef, which has been selling for exceptionally high prices, was hot wanted to the extent that it has been during the spring. A large proportion of the yarding consisted of prime steers, and values fell by at least. £2 a head and, in some instances, more. Cows receded in value by the same amount as steers, but heifers sold firmly.

The top price for steers was £52 17s 6d for the best of eight from C. Jamieson (Halswell). I. C. DAIRY CATTLE There was a very good sale for dairy cattle. Cows were £2 to £2 10s dearer than a fortnight ago, and heifers were up by about £2 a head. The entry totalled about 50 head. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold from £34 to £4l, medium £27 to £33, and others sold down to £l5. A small entry of heifers made from £3O to £37, with odd sales to £44 10s.

_ STORE CATTLE The entry of store cattle was poor In comparison with yardings of recent weeks. There were several lots of station steers and heifers, but most of them were mixed-coloured and of various ages. The usual numbers of nondescript cows and younger cattle were again yarded, and there was a good market for everything. The largest station line consisted of 49 Aberdeen Angus and eight Hereford three-year-old heifers. The Aberdeen Angus heifers made from £29 8s 6d to £34 13s 6d, and the Hereford*; made £32 18s 6d. Another pen of eight two-year-old heifers of similar breeding in good condition made £29 Is. and 15 two-year-old Shorthorn and Hereford heifers realised £29 16s. The adult steers were in poor condition i and the selection wag limited. Nine

Shorthorns made £35 Ils, nine Herefords made £37 18s 6d, and nine ShorthornHerefOrd cross steers made £34 18s 6d. Thirteen -two-year-old Aberdeen Angus steers made £34 3s fid and eight yearlings of similar breeding made £27 Is. Station cows made up to £25 13s 6d for a pen of old cows in hard condition. VEALERS ’ The entry of vealers consisted of a .large proportion of calves. Large runners were penned in small numbers and, as a result, a strong demand prevailed for these cattle nearing the young beef stage. Large runners made to £27 18s 6d, with others down to £l5. Large calves made from £lO to £l4 Is, ordinary from £7 18s 6d to £9 18s 6d, and small calves down to 355. FAT PIGS The yarding in the porker section was by far the largest so far this season, and consisted mainly of good quality sorts. Considering the size of the entry, the sale must be considered a very good one, as all good quality pigs practically maintained late rates. Other sorts were 5s to 8s a head easier. In the chopper section, the entry was also a very large one, and values eased by £1 to 30s a head. Baconers were forwarded In large numbers, and here again best quality pigs practically maintained last sale’s rates, but the large proportion of over-weight and °W: fat types were completely neglected. values were:Light porkers, £6 4s fid to -£6 17s fid. Medium porkers, £7 3s fid to £7 19s fid. Heavy porkers, £8 Is 6d ot £8 9s fid. Choppers. £8 18s 6d to £l6 3s fid. Light baconers, £9 2s fid to £lO 2s fid. Medium baconers, £lO 4s 6d to £lO 19s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 4s 6d to £l2 Is 6d. STORE PIGS The enter in the store pig section was again a fairly large one. and consisted mainly of medium and large stores. Not nearly so many weaners were yarded. There was a medium attendance of buyers and competition was keen throughout the sale, all classes fully maintaining last week’s rates. Values were:— Small weaners, 68s to 755. Best weaners, 80s to 90s. Slips, 91s to 955. Small stores. 102 s to 112 s. Medium stores, 115 s to 1225. Large stores. 128 s to 1355.
