NEW ZEALAND CUP TODAY

trotting

Johnny Globe And Adorian Should Race Well

CHANCE FOR MERVAL IN SECOND LEG

Bios^excUing 5 the The 14 horses in the Cup, which is also ih?'fi'Xf Z F alan ? ♦T r ' > j lng Cup ’ something to recommend them as prospects in today’s race

asn-.“TiT KT S fS '“ “'- E •“« todays race a true test of stamina. However, Johnnv Globe and Tactician have run some of their best races out in front and their drivers may elect to go to the front and make the race live up to its reputation of being the greatest staying race on the calendar. reputation

■nd 0 ’? e «! Vel f 1 spread i£ track conditions are favourable and it is difficult to select the favourite. After his sterling trial at New Brighton a week ago, Johnny Globe has come into favour, and, with a reasonable run today, it is expected that he may gain a well-deserved and popular win for his Templeton owner-trainer, D. G. Nyhan The Lo / a "« D , e^ y , St 2 U Ti - S . r,ght back to the brilliant’form he showed two seasons ago, and if trials are to be taken as a guide for today’s race, he should not be beaten. His 3min 7Jsec for the mile and a half at New Brighton was a brilliant run.

■l/J M h pposlt ' on toI johnny Globe may come from Adorian, which will be bracketed with his half-brother, Morano. Adorian has really shown a preference for shorter distances than the two miles M today’s raC j'i. However, he appears to have improved in stamina this season and he should make a bold showing.

Adorian is a son of Springfield Globe, who sired last year’s winner of the race. Mobile Globe. He is a perfect racehorse. He is a splendid horse at the barrier and he can race anywhere in the field. At New Brighton last Tuesday he made the pace in Johnny Globe’s heat. He bowled along very freely and could have finished much closer to the winner had he been pushed. He shelved no signs of weakening and it may be that his owner-trainer, F. G. Holmes, intends taking him to the front and allowing him to hit, out freely. Whatever position "he is "n in the running, he is certain to be prominent.

Tactician, a gelded son of Springfield Globe, is another expected to take a prominent part in the finish of today's race. He is a grand horse over* all distances. He has had a thorough preparation and will be fit today.

The others in the race are a very even lot and the chances of Burns Night, Pleasant Smile, Soangetaha, Tactics, Thelma Globe and Vedette cannot be overlooked on a firm track. If the going is soft Billy Boy will have great prospects as there are no better performers in bad ground engaged in the race than this Hamiltonowned and trained gelding. In a very open race in which luck in the running will be the deciding factor, the chances of Johnny Globe. Adorian and Tactician are most highly regarded. The brilliant U. Scott mare, Merval. is expected to be the hardest to beat in the second leg of the double, the Empire Handicap. Raced by Mrs W. T. Lowe, of Hinds, and trained at Rakaia by I. M. and W. E. Scoon. Mer Val looks set to win her way to the best classes in quick time. 'For a mare started racing towards the end

of last March, she has compiled an outstanding record, which should be further improved before the meeting is over. z Forward’s Prospects Although Forward has not shown any form this season, he is near his best and can be expected to give a good account of himself. The Light Brigade five-year-old looks handily placed on the front here and he should extend Merval. Heather Dillon has raced well this season against much sterner opposition than she will meet today, and the Dillon Hall mare can be expected to be placed at least. Her placing in the Hannon Memorial Handicap was most impressive, and she should be very fit today. Imperial Trust looked a little unlucky to be beaten by Tactics at New Brighton in September, and he could be one of the hardest to beat today. The Quite Sure gelding is particularly smart over this distance. White Angel, a at Oamaru, Countermark, Duncraig, Star Rosa, and Gay Dene are others expected to race well.

Highland Kilt, Sure Charge, and Father’s Wish are selected to dispute the finish of the main race for trotters, the Worthy Queen Handicap. All three have shown plenty of ability in their races this season, and all of them are near their best lor today’s race. Highland Kilt was most unlucky at Oamaru, and he should win today. Others expected to show up include Barrier Reef, Correction, Swanee River, Dictation, and Mountain Range. A strong field of improving trotters is carded for the Spring Handicap. If Vodka begins as smartly as he did at Xhe New Brighton trials last Tuesday, he should win. However, he is not set an easy task from 60 yards, and Excellenza, Battle Cry, and Battle Royal should offer plenty of opposition. Ascot and Jenny Dillon are others expected to race well. Interest will be taken in performances in the Riccarton Stakes. All the three-year-olds have been entered for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, which will be run on the third day of the meeting. Buccaneer and Brahman will form a strong bracket, and they will probably- be a firm favourite. Invicta, Bounden Duty, Scot-

fish Brigade, Bobby Brigade, and Grand Monarch are others expected to show up. Foranui, which is raced by Mr W. E. Desmond, a member of the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, is selected to win her third race for the season in the Canterbury Handicap. * The Grattan Loyal mare is a greatly-improved pacer, and she should do well over the meeting. Most opposition to Poranui may come from His Majesty, Brave Company, Battleground, Ohio, and Schwanda. Black Douglas will have his most serious test to date in the Introductory Handicap, which has drawn a useful field. He will be bracketed with Bronze Indian, which may also show up. Spring Edition, Magellan, Flagship, Black Wings, and Alkin make most appeal of the remainder. Selections are:— Introductory Handicap: Black Douglas bracket, Spring Edition, Magellan. Spring Handicap: Vodka, Excellenza bracket* Battle Cry. Riccarton Stakes: Buccaneer bracket, Invicta, Bounden Duty. New Zealand Cup: Johnny Globe, Adorian bracket. Tactician. Canterbury Handicap: Poranui, His Majesty bracket. Brave Company. Worthy Queen Handicap: Highland Kilt, Sure Charge bracket, Father’s Wish. Empire Handicap: Merval, Forward, Heather Dillon. Final Handicap: Sally Walla, Scottish Note, Kuhla. Acceptances are:—
