FREYBERG ROSEBOWL CONTEST

RESTRICTION TO SIX TEAMS FAVOURED

' The Canterbury Provincial Golf Association will recommend to the New Zealand Golf Association that the Freyberg rosebowl competition be restricted to six teams,, consisting of two from the South Island and four from the North Island, with eight players -in each team. There were too many teams from. district associations in this contest, said Mr A. R. Blank, at • a meeting of the association last evening. He considered that there should be a reduction in the present number of 16.

“But you wouldn't have a show of eliminating district golf associations from the Freyberg rosebowl contest,” said a member.

“We could have itater-district competitions to select the best players to represent "the province.” Mr Blank said. “If the South Island had a team representing Westland, Marlborough, Nelson, and Canterbury, and a team representing Otago and Southland, the contest would be better,' because players would be better, and there would be more incentive for players to aspire to a higher standard of golf.”

He would rather see six teams of eight players each in the Freyberg rosebowl contest, than the present number of 16 teams, said Mr D. J. Mcßeath.Under the present system, some teams were definitely weak, and provided a ’walk-over” for the strong teams, said Mr E. A. Cleland.

As soon as there were more than six teams in the contest, there was with the draw, said Mr Blank. Under the present system, the best team did no’ win, ' and further, the expenditure incurred was more than the association could stand. To maintain the presen system, levies would have to be raised On the selection of players for big con tests, Mr Blank said’ that golf contest: should be run on the same lines as cricket and footbaU, where representatives for overseas games were selected as a result of inter-provincial contests. Smaller areas were divided into sub-asso-ciations. and players had the opportunity to win their way into provincial teams. The only way to select the best players in the country was to conduct inter-pro-, vincial competitions, said Mr Blank, who moved that the -Canterbury Golf Association favour provincial contests *>y combining the weaker associations into provinces. Mr Blank also moved that the number of teams in the Freyberg rosebowl contest be restricted to six teams, two. from the South Island, one representing Nelson, Marlborough, Westland and . Canterbury, and the second representing Otago and Southland; and four from the North Island, with eight players in each team. The proposal was adopted for submission to the New Zealand Golf
