POLICY OF SOVIET

“China Cannot Be Ignored” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 9 p.m.) MOSCOW, Nov. 6. Russia’s policy was peaceful but “the Imperialist camp,” headed by the United States, was conducting a policy of preparing /for war, Marshal Klementi Voroshilov, President of the Soviet Union, said today. “The dirty campaign of slander against the U.S.S.R. is continuing. The United States is setting up bases near the U.S.S.R. This causes anxiety among peaceful people. “We mfist strengthen the Soviet armed forces all round, standing guard over the peaceful and creative toil of the Soviet people. “The policy of our party and Government is peaceful.” Mr Voroshilov was making a statement of Russian home and foreign policy at a meeting in the famous Bolshoi Theatre on the eve of the celebration of the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Government party and the armed forces.

When the meeting opened, all present stood to honour the memory of Stalin. Mr. Voroshilov said: “The U.S.S.R. and the peoples’ democracies have always fought for a Korean armistice. The imperialists tried to enslave the Korean people. The people of Asia are determined to defend their freedom and independence. “The Chinese People’s Republic cannot be ignored in solving international problems. Without China, one cannot ease the tension in Asia. “Desires in Europe”

“The Soviet Union wants peace in Europe and has repeatedly made proposals for a just settlement of the German problem. “The Western attitude does not show that the West wants a just solution of the German question. The Western Powers want to turn Western Germany into the centre of war in Europe. “We are proud of our past successes. Great tasks are facing us but the Soviet people have never feared diffi-. culties and will steadfastly march towards new successes in the building of communism.” . Mr Voroshilov said that the Nineteenth Congress of the Communist Party marked an important stage in the history of the Soviet Union because it demonstrated the absolute unity of the Soviet people, and its confidence in the party and their leaders. He said that the power of the Soviet Communist Party was based on the fact “that it expresses the fundamental interpsts n-f tno nennle.”
