Johnny Globe’s prospects in this year s cup were not highly regarded until last Tuesday at the New Brighton trials, when he beat seven other cup candidates most decisively after pacihg the mile and a half in the brilliant time of 3min 7£sec. He completed his task without being required to make a serious effort. Johnny Globe bad not raced with his usual dash this season until he beat Burns Night in the All Aged Stakes at Ashburton last month. He has trained on well, and on Tuesday he looked as though he could have carried on for some considerable distance. His ownertrainer has him very St, and it will not ’be because of lack of condition if he fails to make a bold bid to win the cup tomorrow. He may be the actual favourite for the race.

For a horse which has been racing lust over foun seasons Johnny Globe has an outstanding record. He has had 20 wins and 24 placings for £19.550 in stakes, a record which should be bettered before the cup carnival ends. Horses making their Srst appearance in the cup have a great record, and Adorian, which shares the honour of being the youngest horse in the field with Johnny Globe, is expected to do best of the five horses in this category. The others are Billy Boy. Lady Rowan, Thelma Globe, and Tactics.

Adorian has improved each season j ftr his owner-trainer, F. G. Holmes, and he should be near his best now. He has increased ®in stamina each year, and he shoula be ready to run J out a solid two miles. His two wins 5 at Addington in August were excellent . trials for the cup, and last Tuesday < at New Brighton he finished second 1 to Johnnv Globe over one mile and 1 a half. He made most of the pace , in that event, and was not hurried ] in the straight He beat the others just as decisively as he was beaten. ] Second in Auckland Cup Adorian finished a good second - to ( j Soangetaha in the last Auckland Trotting 1 Cup. pacing the two miles in 4min 15sec. He is a. better horse than he was then, .< and it will be surprising if he i* not ■ placed tomorrow. ' Adorian will be bracketed with his ■ half-brother Morano, a disappointing horse to date. He has brilliant speed and stamina, but nervousness at the start of : his races has handicapped him. However. 1 this season, in his only start, in the Hannon Manorial at Oamaru. he began brilliantly only to be checked in the running when looking likely to be placed. Morano is a better track worker than Adorian and, .if he is on his best behaviour tomorrow, he will have prospects. and will be a worthy second string for his West Eyreton trainer. Tactician, which finished second to Mobile Globe in the last cup on a track that did not suit him. should also take part in the finish. The Springfield Globe gelding is a bold pacer, and he can race anywhere in a field. Although he failed to win at Forbury Park last month he ran two brilliant races, and these Should help to bring him to his peak for tomorrow’s race. 'His owner-trainer, M. C. McTigue has had plenty of experience preparing horses for the New Zealand Cup, and it is certain that Tactician will be at the peak of his form tomorrow. M. Holmes will have another, strong bracket in the race with Tactics and Vedette engaged. Tactics, which qualified for the race at New Brighton in September, is a particularly smart pacer, but she has drawn No, 1 on the front. mark. She has not begun well from this position. However, she began smartly at the New Brighton trials and ran a useful race. She has a two-mile record of 4min 12 4-ssec, and, given a favourable run tomorrow, she should take part in the finish. She will be bracketed with Vedette, which is set a difficult task from 48 yards. He is very fit at present, as he showed when he finished with a great burst to take second place behind White Angel in the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru. If there is a slow pace long enough to enable him to get handy to the leaders, he will have prospects. He has a fine record over all distances, his dogged finishing runs being a feature of his racing. Burns Night in Form Bums Night is the problem horse of the field. The U. Scott stallion Was bred by Mr N. G. Mason, of Southbridge, who bred last year’s winner of the race, Mobile Globe. Bums Night is the recordholder over one mile and five furlongs and one mile. He is brilliant on his day, and his owner-trainer, G. McKendry, knows how to time his runs to perfection. He has some decisive wins over two miles, and he is certair\ to be prominent tomorrow. His efforts at Addington in August showed tjiat he had had a strict preparation and his second behind Johnny Globe in the All Aged Stakes •t Ashburton was a useful effort. Given * favourable run tomorrow. Bums Night could easily win. The Auckland district will have a strong representative in Pleasant Smile, which * has been racing and working well since he arrived in Canterbury. He is a much better horse than he was when he raced in the last cup and. if he gets conditions to suit him he should make a bold •hewing. Pleasant Smile has a two-mile record of 4min 11 2-ssec. The Josedale Grattan gelding looked particularly well when worked quietly at Addington yesterday. Thelma Globe was one of the favourites for last year’s cup, but she was withdrawn on the morning of the race because of the heavy track. She is a fine stayer, as she showed when she finished third to van Dieman and Vedette in the Olli vie c Free-for-all last year. She is not always reliable at the barrier, but will need only to begin smartly to have prospects. Soangetaha, a dual Auckland Cup winner, has not won often at Addington. He has been astutely placed in his races'by his trainer. D G. Jones, and so far he has won stakes totalling £20.367 10s. He » well forward for tomorrow’s race, and he should give a good account of himwlf. He is a fine stayer, but prefers firm ground. . Van Dieman was one of the early favourites for the race, but he disappointed ot Oamaru and again at New Brighton «st week. He has had a Special preparation for tomorrow’s race, and. if he u in a generous mooci is certain to be prominent. "He is a fine stayer, and his brilliant sprints at the end of his races have provided many' thrills at Addington “ recent years. t , Lady Rowan has had an interrupted Preparation, and this may be against her. if she were at her best she would have "-be respected. . ■ ~ Maori Home has been working with all hw old dash at Addington, and this hardy Ihllon Hall gelding is always liable to upset calculations. He has finished fourth “ the last two races for the cup, and, although he is an 11-year-old, he cannot be left out of calculations. , , . Billy Boy completes the field, but his Pfospects will hot be very bright unless the track is soft. There are no better Performers in bad ground than this son of ®ul B. and Lady Imperious. He will be cnven by N. L. Berkett, who prepared Mobile Globe for his win in the race. If the track is firm there should be a ®fie race, with the chances of Johnny globe, Adorian, and Tactician most highly regarded.

Highland Kilt Favoured an Plucky third in the Wishful Handicap at Oamaru, is handily placed on the front mark in the Worthy Queen Handicap, and he should Win. The brother to Highland Fling looks fit. He h^ s j a sea rching preparation, and he should do well at the meeting. . "■ Young will parade a strong bracket m Sure .Charge and Indomitable, both of which have been working well at Addington during the last few days. Sure Charge from six yards, may be the better. well° Indomitable should also race

The Australian-owned Raider mare, father s Wish, had a-decisive win in the Wishful Handicap at Oamaru, and off tiie front mark she will have to be respected.

Correction showed to advantage at the New Brighton trials. The Lucky Jack mare has not had the best of fortune ,5 £ aces « but over this distance she should be prominent. Mountain Range should be improved by his run at New Brighton last week. This speedy Grattan Loyal gelding looks very fit, and it will not be surprising if he makes a bold showing for his new trainer, J. T 5. Hampton. Fair Isle and Precaution are two smart trotters engaged on the front mark, and they should add interest. Precaution would have bright prospects on a heavy track.

Barrier Reef and Swahee River, on 12 yards, are capable sprinters. Both have done well lately, and they should show up. If Dictation, the backmarker, is at his nest, he will have prospects. The Josedale Dictator gelding has caused his owner-trainer, J. Wilson, some concern in recent months, but, if near his best, he could easily win. However, he may find Highland Kilt, Sure Charge, and Father’s Wish too seasoned for him. The Second Leg Merval is expected to win her fourth race for the season in the second leg of the double, the Empire Handicap. The U. Scott mare is a brilliant fiacer, and, although she will be having her most serious test to date, she should come through with honours. She has had plenty of time to freshen up since she Won at Forbury Park last month, and it will be surprising if she fails to win more than one race at the meeting. Forward showed to advantage at the New Brighton trials last week. He is particularly smart .over fhe distance of tomorrow’s race, and may beat Merval. He is a half-brother to Adorian. one of the favourites for the cup. Heather Dillon has been racing most consistently this season, but' she has not had much luck. She will not find it easy to give starts of 24 yards to Merval and Forward, but She should be placed. White Angel showed that she was back to her best when she won the Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru. If she has trained on satisfactorily she will have prospects.

Gay Dene has been a disappointment since last season. The Sandy dale pacer has hfs share of ability, but - he has not been running on well in his races. If he. strikes form he will have to be respected.

Dawnlight and Greek Brigade are two northern pacers with fair form, and they are certain to be supported. Imperial Trust is overdue for a win. The Quite Sure gelding looked in fine, heart Tit New Brighton last week, and he can be relied on to race prominently. The best of the others may be Duncraig

Poranui. winner of two races earlier in the season, has done well since she was beaten by Merval In the Methven Cup. and she should show to- advantage. The Grattan Loyal mare is one ofxthe most improved pacers seen this season, and she should carry on for her trainer, A. M. Purdon.

The Templeton owner-trainer. C. L. Rhodes, will parade a strong bracket in His Majesty and Au Revoir. Au Revoir has raced most generously this season, and his two wins have been most impressive. His Majesty is rapidly approaching his best formj. and his second to Au Revoir at Forbury Park was- pleasing. The brother to Fallacy is a smart pacer, and he should be one of the hardest to beat. Brave Company has taken time to return, to his good form of last season, but he should be near his best. Battleground has been disappointing this season, but he has the ability to do much better if he begins smartly. A very high opinion is held of this Dunedinowned pacer, and he should gain his first win for the season during the meeting. Ohio, Gay Lyric and Schwanda have all shown worth-while form thisxseason, and tney should add interest to a very open race. '

Sally Walla and Scottish Note will dispute favouritism for the Final Handicap. Both horses have won impressively in recent weeks, and they should again be proininent. Sally Walla is more reliable than Scottish Note at the barrier, and this will be in her favour over one mile and a half. , Kuhla has raced well over all distances in recent weeks, and he will need only to begin smartly to gain an overdue win. The Pacing Power geldihg has done well recently, and it will be surprising if he fails to show up. King’s Order is a smart pacer on his day. but he is not always reliable. He could easily cause a surprise. Others in the race likely to show up include Midnight, Fearless Peter, and Rola V Vodka won so well at the New Brighton trials that his handicap of 60 yards should not worry him in the Spring Handicap. The Logan Derby trotter has tremendous speed, and will need only to begin reasonably well to win. Excelienza has raced most generously this season, and off 12 yards is entitled to respect. She is a much-improved horse. Battle Cry has been .disappointing, but he may do better tomorrow. He is a brilliant young trotter and is well up to this class. Others in the race expected to race well include Battle Royal, Ascot, Jenny Dillon, and Red Valley. , . Black Douglas, which will be bracketed with Bronze Indian, will be a firm favourite for the Introductory Handicap, which has drawn a strong field of improving pacers. Spring Edition has not had much luck in her recent racing. She is very fit, and should be hard to beat. Magellan won well at the New Brighton trials and he will have to be respected, as vrill Regal Gold and Black Wings. Flagship may cause a surprise. The Gold Bar pacer is right back to hfs best after a long spell. He .may need a run to bring him to his peak, but may be forward enough to win. He is much above S aS° in abiUty - but bas been troubled by soreness.
