ATHLETICS

MEETING AT RUGBY PARK

A 4min 30.8 sec mile by the Marist runner, J. C. Daly, was the outstanding event at the athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon. The sodden track, with heavy rain squalls during the earlier part of the meeting, prevented performances generally from reaching a high standard.

In the mile J. K. Macdonald (Crichton Cobbers) set a fast pace for the first quarter, with Daly, R. Heaps (Crichton Cobbers), and C. Reece (Olympic) handy, with breaks to J. Kyle (Marist) and M. R. Craighead (University). Daly and Heaps passed a tiring Macdonald in the third lap, and Daly then drew away from Heaps, opening up a 30-yard gap.

The Canterbury long jump champion, P. Price (New Brighton) made light work of the heavy going to head the senior A grade 100 yards in 10.7 sec. The 12J-mile road race, run through > the Shirley, Marshland, Styx, Papanui, and St. Albans districts, was won by R. Maddock (Olympic). With a lOmin start on the back-marker, W. Richards (Technical), and giving the front-markers, R. Luke (Technical) and A. McDonald (Polytechnic), smin, Maddock ran a solid race, dropping his co-marker, F. H. Stevens (Olympic). Maddock also gained third fastest time. Fastest time was recorded by Richards, who returned 67min 52sec. It was a tribute to the handicapper of this event, Mr C. C. Gordon, that five of the competitors were finishing within the park at the same time.

Giving away handicaps up to 50 yards in the junior 880 yards, T. Ludecke (Christ’s College) gathered in the field over the first lap. He finished strongly to win from G. Leeming (Boys’ High School), off 10 yards, in 2min B.9sec.

Abbreviations used in the results are: N.B. (New Brighton), T. (Technical). W.

(Westonian), M. (Marist), C.C. (Crichton Cobbers). U. (University), O. (Olympic), P. (Polytechnic), B.H.S. (Boys’ High School), C. (Canterbury Club), Coll. (Christ’s College).
