Sir,—The future of Dr. Jobbern’s ‘ educational precinct” is a civic matter; that of Canterbury College is at least a provincial—partially a national —one. These two, though admittedly related, should be considered separately; the proper treatment of the national problem of the college’s future should not be endangered by tying it to that of the civic problem. By confusing these two issues, and with sentimentality , and half-trusts posing as evidence, you and Dr. Jobberns have succeeded in persuading some excusably ill-informed citizens and inexcusably ill-informed Members of Parliament of three (at least) palpable untruths, namely, that the college council (a) made a hasty decision in 1949, (b) had po expert advice on the matter then or since, and (c) is now undecided. If the Government is looking for an excuse to delay the rebuilding programme, the next generation of students will have you both to thank for their increasing discomfort.—Yours, etc., R. D. NEALE. November 7, 1953.
