U.S. BUILDS CHEAP ATOM SMASHER

(Rec. 7 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 5. A cheap atom smasher, called by its maker the “Swindletron” because it seems to get something for nothing, is being built at the University of California.

The relatively-small instrument will produce a beam of atomic particles bearing charges of 4,000,000 volts each, even though it uses only a 500,000-volt power source.

The “Swmdletron” is meant to do work now done by larger and more expensive apparatus, such as the Van der Graaf generator and the Cock-croft-Walton voltage multiplier, much used in low energy atomic research.. Its cost is less than one-fifth that of these latter devices.

Shipbuilders Demonstrate.— Members of the 3.000,000-strong British Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, who demand a 15 per cent increase, yesterday staged street demonstrations in London and . “token strikes” in other parts of Britain.— London, November. 5.
