VETERINARY SERVICES COUNCIL. BURSARIES FOR SELECTED STUDENTS. The Veterinary Services Council invites application for a number of Bursaries to enable selected Students, who have completed either their Medical Intermediate or Agricultural Equivalent examinations, to take the four-year course in Veterinary Science at Sydney University. Applicants are required to appear before a special committee appointed by the Council for the selection of bursars. Here are the details of the bursaries:— 1. Payment of an annual allowance of £2O (N.Z.) for books. 2. Return transport between New Zealand and Sydney annually. 3. Payment of an allowance of £3 10s (N.Z.) per week during attendance at the Sydney University. 4. Contributions to Superannuation

Scheme. In addition to the above, second, third, and fourth year students are granted an "increased costs allowance.” the amount being fixed from year to year; the amount for 1953 was £5O (N.Z.). The .net value of the bursary over the four-year period is £640 (N.Z.), plus "increased cost allowance.” All amounts provided in excess of this are repayable in forty-ieight equal monthly instalments after the graduation of the bursar. Bursars are required to undertake extra rural training in vterinary work in New Zealand during, the final year of their course.

Continuation of the bursary is contingent on satisfactory reports from the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Sydney. Bursars are required to enter into an agreement to return to New Zealand after graduation and to serve in an approved veterinary capacity for a period of five consecutive years.

The present salary scale for Veterinrians employed by Clubs is as follows: First year after graduation .. £BOO Second year after graduation £B5O Third year after graduation .. £9OO Fourth year after graduation £lOOO Fifth year after graduation .. £llOO Thereafter promotion is in accordance 'ith ability and service.

PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO IMPORT DUTIES ON METAL WINDOW FRAMES. THE 804. RD OF TRADE proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed on Tariff Item 375, which reads as follows:—"Window sashes, or frames, metal.” The .present rates of import duty •in respect of this item are: British Preferential 20 per cent*, General 45 per cent.* ’Plus surtax at the rate of ninefortieths of the amount of duty. Where surtax is payable under the British Preferential rate, such surtax relates only to goods imported from Ireland (except Northern Ireland), Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan, and Canada. During the course of this inquiry, the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider any representations which may be made in favour of the re-imposition of import licensing over all or any of the goods in question. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of this tariff item, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing oil Tuesday, February 16, 1954, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Dedepartmental Building, Stout street, Wellington.
