EAST GERMANY’S PRECAUTIONS

Prevention Of New Uprisings BERLIN, October 11. East Germany is putting “blitz commandos”—picked troops in armoured vehicles—into large* towns to guard against any new popular uprisings. They have machine-guns, light artillery, and plenty of vehicles. Their job is to crush any anti-Gov-ernment movements. Other changes in East Germany in recent months which would make a repetition of the revolt of June 17 much harder are the recruitment of 10,000 to 20,000 (reports vary on numbers) of young firmly Communist men to the People’s Police; the reshuffling and strengthening of the security police; a purge of the Socialist Unity (Communist) Party; and similar purges in the trade union and youth movement.
