RADIO REPORTS OF RACE

LAST MESSAGE SENT YESTERDAY Radio reports all along the route from London to Christchurch kept the world fully informed on the progress of aircraft in the race to Harewood. From the communications centre operated by civil aviation branch of the Air Department came a flow of messages by teleprinter to the press room. The last messages officially finishing the air race were received when the last competitor to arrive, Wing Commander D. R. Cuming, R.A.A.F., landed about 2 p.m. yesterday. Six messages 1 marked the end of the historic event. The first was: Canberra Item Peter Baker acutal time departure Laverton 2319 expects arrive Harewood 1.45. Next came the report: Canberra 160 miles off Hokitika now and then at 42 (42,000 ft 157 miles from Christchurch. Another message said ETA (estimated time of arrival) Harewood now 2—loo miles out. The next reported that the Canberra was flying at height of 26,500 ft. Then the operator in the communications centre tapped out the message “Closing down.” The LondonChristchurch international air race had ended.
