ROSEWALL BEATS SEIXAS

(Rec. 9 p.m.)’ SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 20. Vic Seixas, the defending champion, was outmanoeuvred by Ken Rosewall (Australia) in the men’s singles final of the South-west Pacific tennis tournament at Los Angeles today. Rosewall won, 6-4, 1-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Seixas tried to beat Rosewall by staying at the baseline, contrary to his usual strategy. This proved his undoing, as Rosewall, with uncanny backline placements, passed him. The match was marred slightly by some questionable calls by linesmen, each one on an important point in a seesawing match. In almost every instance, Seixas and Rosewall indicated that they both disagreed with the linesmen’s decisions. The United Press tennis writer said: ‘‘This was almost certainly an indication of play in the Davis Cup match in Australia in December, when Seixas and Rosewall will meet again.” Hoad and Rosewall won the men’s doubles final, 17-15, 6-3, 6-2. They beat Seixas and Trabert. Miss Doris Hart won the women's singles championship when she beat Miss Shirley Fry, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Yesterday, Miss Fry beat the world champion, Mist Maureen Connolly. 6-2, 6-5, m the semi-final. It was Miss Connollys second major defeat in 1953. In the final of the women’s doubles. Misses Hart and Fry beat Misses Louise Brough and Thelma Long, 6-4, 7-5.
