The Chief of Air Staff (Air ViceMarshal D. V. Carnegie) ayd the Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Group Captain T. F. Gill) left Wellington yesterday morning for Fiji to inspect the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Lauthala Bay.—(P-A.) The Commissioner of Police (Mr E. H. Compton) will leave Auckland by the Wanganella tomorrow to attend the annual conference at Hobart of police commissioners of Australian states. Mr Compton, who will be accompanied by the secretary of the Police Department (Mr F. A. Giles), will return about October 27. Each year an invitation is extended to the New Zealand commissioner to attend. Some items for the conference agenda are submitted by New Zealand.— (P.A.)

Mr J. V. T. Baker, of Wellington, has been appointed deputy Government Statistician. For the last two years he has been economist to the Census and Statistics Department, and previously was senior research officer in the Labour and Employment Department. .
