TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILDS

ANNUAL MEETING OF COUNCIL About 200 members, including delegates from 38 guilds, attended the annual council meeting of the Dominion Federation of Townswomen's Guilds in Wanganui. Mrs L. Faulkener Smith, Dominion president, introduced the Mayor of Wanganui (Mr W. J. Rogers), who opened the meeting. He was accompanied by Mrs Rogers, who had been , the convener of the inaugural meeting which formed the Wanganui guild 18 years ago. Mr Rogers congratulated the guilds on their growth. They were a potent force in their communities, he said. At a school for officers held during the session, instructive talks were given and problems explained. The speakers were: Mrs B. Wilson (Gisborne), “Procedure”: Mrs H. S. Dyson (Auckland), “The President”; Mrs F. W. McCullough (Dunedin), “The Secretary”: Mrs R. Lake (Christchurch), “The Treasurer.” The following officers and executive committee were elected:—president, Mrs F. S. Dyson (Auckland); vicepresidents. Mrs C. Plumridge (Christchurch) and Mrs L. Faulkener Smith (Wellington); secretary, Mrs H. V. Doran (Lower Hutt): treasurer, Mrs I. Guthrie (Wellington); minute secretary, Mrs J. O’Hara (Lower Hutt); editor “The Townswoman,” Mrs R. Lake (Christchurch); committee, Mesdames R. Crowley (Wellington), F. Dawe (Napier), F. W. McCullough (Dunedin). F. J. McKay (Timaru), and B. Wilson (Gisborne).

NOTES Miss M. E. Payne, area vice-presi-dent for the Pacific of the Associated Countrywomen of the World, was due to arrive in the Dominion yesterday, and will visit Christchurch about October 13. when she will address members of women’s institutes. Miss Payne recently attended the international conference of Business and Professional Women at Stockholm and the conference of the A.C.W.W. at Toronto. She is an Australian, whose home is at Wombramurra. Nundle. New South Wales. Miss Payne' will arrive in Christchurch from Dunedin, and later will visit North Canterbury. Miss E. Brown, of Wellington. Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, arrived in Christchurch last evening from Blenheim. She will leave for Hanmer this morning, and return to Christchurch tomorrow. On Thursday evening she will speak at a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association. Miss Brown was one of three New Zealand delegates to the International Council of Nurses’ Congress in Brazil in July. Thirty years of nursing the sick and the wounded is the record of Matron V. M. Hodges, who is in charge of the Wakari Chest Hospital. Dunedin, and will retire at the end of this month from a career which has taken her to many countries. She completed her general training at the Dunedin Public Hospital in 1926. and after finishing her Plunket and midwifery courses, went to the Wanganui Hosnital in 1932. During the Second World War, Miss Hodges served in the Libyan Desert and in Italy.

Mrs N. F. Sorrell (Fendalton), Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union, will attend the annual conference of the union to be held in Dunedin early next month. Miss A. L. ‘Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the garden circle of the women’s section of the Returned Services’ Association, held in the Jellicoe Hall. Mrs H. A. Bishop spoke on the floral display to be held in October. An interesting demonstration of floral arrangements for the home was given by Mrs S. Shuttleworth, who also judged the competitions. Results were as follows: decorative—A class: Mrs F. Whit-, eley 1. Mrs A. E. Cooper 2, Mrs E. Beumelberg 3. B class: Mrs R. East 1, Mrs M. Everest 2, Mrs O’Brien 3. Best bloom in garden—A class: Miss S. Britton 1, Mrs J. McCrossan 2, Mrs J. Annand 3. B class: Mrs Odell 1. Mrs P. C. Browne 2, Mrs M. Everest 3.

In her report to the annual meeting of the Lyttelton, branch of the Nurse Maude Association. Nurse M. Tait, district nurse, stated that during the year she had made 2693 visits to 309 patients. *

Final plans for daffodil day were made at the monthly meeting of the council of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association. Mrs L. W. McCaskill appealed to members for their support in an endeavour to meet the extra commitments in running the Kindergarten Training College, and the increased cost of administration. Miss R. Wilkie reported that Kindergartens reopened with good attendances. The pupils of two kindergartens are to visit Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, soon. A welcome was given to Miss B. Pierce (Beckenham), Miss E. Coe (North Beach), and Miss J. Thorpe (South Brighton), also to two assistants, Mrs Wood (Edmonds Park) and Mrs Ellis (Linwood).

At the September meeting of the Oxford garden club Mr Hurndell, of the Department of Agriculture, gave a talk on pests and their control in the vegetable garden. There was a large attendance. Taylor 3; best bloom: Mr R. F. Silcock 1, Mrs F. Gorton 2, Mrs E. Skurr 3; six brussels sprouts: Mrs F. Gorton 1, Mrs M. H. Johnston 2. Miss N. Mulholland presided at the September meeting of the Darfield Garden Club. A competition for a plant was won by Mrs Pascoe. The guest speaker was Mrs H. E. Radley, who gave an account of the decorative work she had seen during her visit to Europe. Competition results were:— decorative. Mrs R. Jarman 1, Miss J. In Wellington, 300 persons attended a reception in honour of their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Norrie given by the Victpria League and the Overseas League last week. The reception was for members of the two societies, which combined in arranging the function. Visitors present included the United Kingdom High Commissioner (General Sir Geoffry Scoones) and Lady Scoones, and the Australian High Commissioner (Mr P. R. Heydon) and Mrs Heydon.
