ATIAMURI POWER STATION

PRELIMINARY WORK BEGUN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. September 21. Preliminary work has started on the site of the Atiamuri hydro-electric power station, the next to be built in the Waikato river chain, but the fixing of camp sites and other decisions have to be made befpre major activity begins. New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., working in conjunction with the Ministry of Works, is felling trees from its pine plantation on the right bank of the river near the site. The Ministry is negotiating with other timber interests for the removal of the trees on the left bank. Men are clearing a track through the bush at the Atiamuri end to allow the State Hydro-electric Department to extend the 50,000 k.r. transmission line from Arapuni past Whakamaru. The lay-out of all plant is being planned, and further tests of sand for use in bulding the dam are being made. . Recruits will have to be added to the Ministry’s labour force to enable the new project to proceed simultaneously with the one at Whakamaru.
