WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Prebbleton.— Mr H. W. Beaumont told members of the Prebbleton Country Women’s Institute how the museum helped in the education of schoolchildren. He said the teaching of history and geography was made easy when the children could actually see and handle many of the exhibits in the museum. He appealed for support of the appeal for funds for the' extension of the museum. Mrs A. H. Button, of Lincoln, gave a demonstration, of how to make pictures from pressed flowers. Members contributed old linen for the Nurse Maude Association; also materials to be used for demonstration purposes in the newly formed institutes in Malaya. Competitions were won by Mesdames L. Smith, B. Kearns, G. LongstafTe, D. Morris, W. Downey. R. Mclntosh, H. Claughton. and H. Prebble.

Omihl.— Mrs Harrison presided at the August meeting of the Omihi Country Women’s Institute. Final arrangements were made for a bus trip in September. It was reported that members had attended a basketmaking class conducted by Mrs Mauger in Christchurch. Results of competitions were:—large bloom: Mrs Stackhouse 1 and 2. Small bloom: Mrs Stackhouse 1 and 2. Belgium biscuits: Mrs Chapman 1, Mrs Campbell 2. Knitted article, adult section: Mrs Chapman 1, Miss S. McLean 2. Children’s section. Mrs Stackhouse 1, Miss B. Wyllie 2. Burnham.— Women from Howardville were the guests of the members of the Bumham Country Women’s Institute at their monthly meeting. Mr J. Glazebrook, of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, showed coloured slides of many of the homes and gardens in Christchurch. Members contributed to a collection for the Westminster Abbey Restoration Fund. A number of traycloths made by >ie members were presented to the ham Camp Hospital by Mrs Nicholas. Spike: Mrs Weeds 1, Mrs Scott 2. Miss Chamberlain 3. Large bloom: Mrs Anstiss 1, Miss Chamberlian 2, Mrs Scott 3. Small bloom: Mrs Weeds 1, Mrs S. J. Williams 2, Mrs G. Williams 3. The Peaks.— Mrs L. Hassall presided over the September meeting of The Peaks Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Power was appointed delegate to the half-yearly meeting at Rangiora. Donations were made to the Westminster Abbey Restoration fund and the housekeeper fund. Demonstrations were given by Mrs Mason, of Mason’s Flat, on the making of plaited cushions and nylon posies and of a simple method of drying beans and peas. Arrangements were made for the annual bring and buy in October. Competitions, judged b Mesdames Mason and Galletly, resulted as follows:—Large bloom: Mrs L. Hassall 1, Mrs A. Hassall 2, Mrs L.
