SKIING

N.Z. TEAM RETURNS FROM AUSTRALIA (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 20. Twelve members of a party of 20 skiers from the Waitaki, Otago, Southland, and Wakatipu Ski Clubs arrived at Wellington by air from Sydney today after paying a return visit to skiers in the northeastern districts of Victoria who came to New Zealand last year. The team captain, G. D. Cochrane, of Queenstown, who wore a green hat adorned with the badges of 17 or 18 Australian ski clubs, said that Australian skiing grounds were different from those in New Zealand in that the snow falls there were heavier. Snow lay to an average depth of 12ft to 15th, skiers sometimes having to dig their way down thrown the snow to get into the mountain lodges. It was also possible to ski for longer distances in Australia, and ski tours of the countryside were popular.
