SMART EFFORT BY FULGENT

USEFUL TRIAL FOR DUNEDIN GUINEAS

Mr H. D. Greenwood’s small but capable Red Mars gelding Fulgent was seen as a possible Dunedin Guineas winner on the first day of the spring meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. Making his first appearance for the season, he finished strongly into second place behind Paulette in the Kaikorai Handicap, seven furlongs. A mile should not trouble Fulgent, which should be a fitter horse after Saturday’s race.

Accountant was the only Dunedin Guineas candidate to win on Saturday. His success came in the Trial Handicap, in which he got the run of the race in the trailing position before reaching the front in the straight. There was some doubt whether he would run the distance but he showed that seven furlongs is within his compass when he can dodge pacemaking. Accountant’s win was well deserved after minor placings at Riccarton and Ashburton. He is >a neat colt by Treasure Hunt from Reshuffle, trained at Riccarton by R. C. Whitford for Mt O. Evens. Adelaide Winner

Recent wins by Chief Light and Dahlia have kept the Simper family to the fort in New Zealand racing. St. Light, a six-year-old St. Magnus gelding, gave the family another success in Adelaide re-

cently. St. Light is from Laughing Light, a Night Raid mare from Glad Light, which, is by Paper Money from Simper. St. Light was bred by the executors of the late Mr W. T. Hazlett in Victoria. Racing Consistently Johnny Peep is a sprinter which thrives

on a minimum of fast work, and with that treatment he is racing very consistently this season for his Methven owner, Mr K. G. McLaughlin, for whom he is trained by J. A. Wilson. Johnny Peep showed great dash to reach the front near the half-mile in the Telegraph Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday and then shake off all challenges. He won by a length and a half from Gold ’ King. The consistent Delayed was a fair third. Johnny Peep did his early racing for Mr. D. McFarlane, Delayed’s owner. Lance Wing the Best Although Mr D. H. Blackie, whose Wife owns Dixie, has raced several outstanding horses, including Swanee (Auckland Cup), Florida (Avondale Cup), and Lord Foxbridge (Auckland Racing Club Handicap), he rates Lance Wing as the best horse he ever raced. Mr Blackie raced Lance Wing before he left Dunedin to live in the North Island. Speaxing of Lance Wing after Dixie’s Avondale Cup success, he said: “He -Was extra curly—a real horse!” Trained at Wingatui by the late F. Shaw, Lance Wing (Irish Lancer—Wingatui) won 10 races, including the C.J.C. Sockbum Handicap, the Gore Racing Club Handicap, and the Oamaru Cup. For several years he held the Otago-Southland mile and a quarter record of 2mln 4sec. Three Behind Broughton W. D. Skelton's feat of riding three winners at Wingatui on Saturday gave him another good start for the season. He has now ridden four winners for the season, but he is three behind W. J. Broughton, the runner-up. to Skelton in the jockeys’ premiership last season. V. J. Sellars rode one winner at Marton on Saturday, making him equal with Broughton. A. J. Stokes, who rode Hush Money to win the McLean Stakes at Wingatui on Saturday has now had five successes this season. He started the season well by riding three winners at the Nations) meeting. Honours to Precipitation Premonition, winner of the English St. Leger Stakes, is the third winner of the event sired by Precipitation, the others being Airborne and Cnamossaire. Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old, one of which was the Gainsborough Stakes, one mile, at Hurst Park, Premonition is from the Fair Trial mare Fair Ground, which Won Pnly a maiden two-year-old event, but was second twice in her other three starts. She was sold for 7200gns to Mrs W. P. Wyatt, whose husband races Premonition. The second dam. Tip the Wink, is a half-sister to Golden Eagle, which sired the Derby winner Pensacola during his brief stud career in New Zealand.

Another stallion closely related to these ' horses was Lord Bobs, whose secbnd dam, ' Sarita, is the third dam of Premonition. ■ Lord Bobs died early in his career at Mr Ken Austin’s Inglew’ood Stud, KaiaSires of Jumpers Robin Goodfellow was the leading sire of jumpers in New Zealand in the 1952□3 season.
