KOREA TRUCE CONFERENCE

Soviet Seeks New U.N. Debate (NJS. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 1130 pan.) NEW YORK, September 20. Die Soviet Union moved yesterday to reopen the debate on the composition of the Korean peace conference when it formally requested the United Nations General Assembly to consider the request of Communist China for a round-table conference which would include India, Burma, Indonesia and Pakistan. The Soviet delegate (Mr Andrei Vyshinsky) asked for a debate on Chinese and North Korean objections to the General Assembly’s decision last month providing for a two-sided conference. The 16 United Nations members that fought in Korea have agreed to oppose any Communist attempt to reopen the debate on the composition of the conference, which is supposed to be held by October 28. Reuter’s United Nations correspondent says the British view is that it would be fruitless to bring up the question of the composition of the conference again. What would happen in the case of a prolonged delay in setting up the conference would be something else to think about.

The United States, on behalf of the Allied nations with troops in Korea, yesterday asked the Chinese Communists and the North Koreans for an early reply as to a place and time acceptable to them for the Korean political conference.

The message said: “It is essential that preparations for the conference start immediately.” The United States Government has requested the Swedish Government, which has diplomatic representation in Peking, to forward the message. The text of the message was agreed upon at a meeting of representatives of the 16 Allied nations which sent troops to Korea.
