COST OF RURAL POWER LINES

ELIGIBILITY FOR TAX i RELIEF J SUPPORT BY SECRETARIES < OF BOARDS 1 (New Zeaiana Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 20. “The capital contribution by consumers, or part of the capital contribution to meet the cost of erection of power lines in rural areas, should be allowed as a deduction for income tax purposes.” This was the text of a remit passed at the annual conference of the New Zealand Electrical Supply Authority Secretaries’ Association in Dunedin on Saturday. The remit will be submitted to the annual conference of the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association this week. Proposing the remit, Mr A. M. Campbell said Otago, with many comparatively isolated communities and settlers, nad a difficult iob of power reticulation. Taxation relief would encourage settlers to secure reticulation. Mr R. P. Baigent said that unless some tax relief was given, it would be more difficult to take power supplies to remote areas. It was desirable to encourage settlers to secure supplies. The president (Mr G. A. Ammundsen) said he doubted whether it was the association’s job to seek adjustments in the income tax system. He felt, however, that it would be better if the association supported settlers in seeking this relief.

Heavy Rain in Aden— A violent thunderstorm followed by three hours of torrential rain today transformed this normally cinder-dry colony. Wadi beds, some of which had been dry for years, quickly filled and became fast-flowing rivers rushing over beaches to the sea. The famous Roman tanks in the volcanic crater of Aden were filled from the surge of water from the heights surrounding the main town.—Aden, September 19.
