CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Harry Morrison (Idaho) who has been visiting Wellington with her husband, who is president of the contracting company, Morrison, Knudsen, Ltd., has written a book on her experiences as secretary to her husband. She has accompanied her husband on all his trips since their marriage and has visited all of the countries in which the company has branches, except Turkey, and she will go there soon. Countries in which there are branches include French Morocco, Arabia. Mexico, Afghanistan and South America.

Mrs L. Hindle presided at a meeting of the Redcliffs-Sumner Garden Club in the Methodist Hall, Redcliffs. The guest speakers were Mrs L. R. Barnett and Mrs A. R. Lilley, who discussed decorative art. Both speakers were from South bridge. Competitions resulted:—Container of spring flowers: Mrs A. A. Brown 1, Mrs J. Knutson 2, Mrs A. B. Cullens 3. Bowl of polyanthus: Mrs J. S. Shimmin and Miss A. The annual meeting of the North Brighton Women’s Own was held in the Baptist Hall where the president (Mrs F. G. Oxley) presided over a B°°d attendance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—president, Mrs Oxley; vice-presidents, Mrs E. N. Goring and Mrs L Hudson; secretary, Mrs H. Brookerr treasurer, Mrs F. Meads; committee, Mesdames A. Smith, L. Dixey, R. Townsend and L. Brooker. Recently the third anniversary celebrations commenced with a good attendance of members at a Sunday evening service at the Baptist Church, North Brighton. Mrs A. Willmot, of the Trinity Congregational Church, Christchurch, gave an address, and the Women’s Own Choir and various members took part. This was followed by a fellowship hour and supper. The celebrations continued the next day with a party which was attended by 51 adults and 30 children, including representatives from the North Beach Methodist Ladies’ Guild, the St. Columba Presbyterian Guild, the Brighton Presbyterian Guild, the Salvation Army, and the North Brighton Women’s Institute. Games, competitions and humorous items were enjoyed, and tea was served.

Mrs W. D. Bunt presided at a general meeting of the Home Economics Association. Members arranged a display of needlework, floral arrangements, cookery and pottery. The music circle sang "Come to the Fair,” accompanied by Miss Mitchell. Mrs A. C. Potter gave a demonstration of flower arrangements suitable for a special occasion in the home, and a shoulder spray.

Mr R. Wynne-Owen presided at the monthly social of the Christchurch Welsh Society, which took the form of a film evening. Films of Wales and New Zealand were enjoyed by a large gathering of members and friends. The evening was arranged and compered by Mr W. J. Roberts. The accompanist was Mrs David James. Welsh news was given by Mr R. B. Richards. At the monthly meeting of the Central Townswomen’s Guild, Mrs E. Hodge presided and Mrs J. McGeorge acted as secretary. It was reported that 28 members had travelled by special bus to Timaru to attend the sixteenth birthday party of the Timaru Townswomen’s Guild. Two sketches were presented by the drama circle. Those taking part were Mesdames Spedding, Partridge, Wilson, Blick, Ford, Mouncer. McKillow. Mrs George Roth has just returned from a flying tour of the Fashion Centres of JCurope, America and Australia. Whilst visiting London, Paris and Rome she had the privilege of seeing some wonderful previews of the very latest in millinery.
