AFRICA BEATS AUSTRALIA

RUGBY FOOTBALL

FOUR TRIES TO ONE IN THIRD TEST (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, September 19. South Africa won the third test against the touring Australian Rugby team at Durban today. South Africa scored 18 points (three goals from tries and a try) to 8 (a goal from a try and a penalty goal). Magnificent all-round play by the Springbok forwards, and certain tackling by the backs, kept the Australians subdued until the cosing stages of the game. South Africa led 10-0 at half-time, and led 15-0 before the Australians opened their score with a penalty goal. Just before the end, after South Africa had scored another try, the Australians came to light with a typical, spectacular effort. Burke picked up a loose ball in his twenty-five and broke right through, drawing the full-back (Buehler) before passing to Cross, who outpaced Van Schoor and scored under the posts. Colbert converted easily, and the game ended soon after, with the Australians still attacking.

South Africa’s first try came as a surprise. The ball went into touch on the Australian twenty-five, Dolf Bekker threw the ball in quickly, and took a reverse pass, catching the Australian defence unawares. He ran down the line to score, and Rens converted a difficult kick. Just before half-time the Springboks won a ruck in the Australian twenty-five, and a centre three-quarter, Danie Rossouw, beat the defence and dived over with an Australian tackler hanging on. Rens again converted. At the start of the second half, the other Springbok centre three-quarter, van Schoor, who throughout had been giving John Solomon no room to move, tackled the Australian captain and .Solomon lost the ball, which was swept up by the South African forwards for a try by Jaap Bekker under the posts. Rens again converted. When South Africa was penalised for a scrum infringement, Solomon put over a good kick, 35 yards out. South Africa’s lead was restored by a try by Van Wyk, and after a final dramatic effort by the Australians, the game ended. South Africa 18, Australia 8. The teams were:— Australia: R. Colbert, G. Jones, E. Stapleton, J. Solomon (captain), J. Phipps, S. Brown,. C. Burke, N. Shehadie, J. Walsh, C. Forbes, A. Miller, A. Cameron, K. Cross, B. Johnson, N. Hughes. South Africa: J. Buehler, S. Hoffman, D. Bekker, D. Rossouw, R. Van Schoor, I. Rens, J. Oelofse, H. Newton-Walker, W. Delport, J. Bekker, J. Durand, J. Pickard, S. Fry, H. Muller (captain), C. van Wyk.

CANTERBURY B BEATEN

15 6 WIN TO SOUTH CANTERBURY

Little interest was taken m the representative match between South Canterbury and the Canterbury B team played at Lancaster Park on Saturday, and the attendance was the smallest seen at a representative match for a long time. The few who did attend seemed more interested in progress scores in the Ranturly Shield match at Wellington, and this preference appeared to be shared by the players. It was a typical end-of-the-season game, played on a hard, fiery ground with few organised efforts carried to a successful issue. For the second time this season

a Canterbury team was beaten by South Canterbury, the score this time being 15 points to 6. Although there were few combined efforts several players enlivened the game with good individual bursts, the outstanding player being the South Canterbury half-back, R. Green, who, finding it impossible to get results from passing rushes, made quick dashes from behind the scrum and several times had the defence sorely worried. Only lack of support and dropped passes robbed his side of several tries. Green, a stockilybuilt half-back, is a clever young player of whom more should be heard. A. J. Henley, who had played in the All Black trials at Christchurch, was out of form at first five-eighths and was a weak link between his half-back, Green, and second five-eighths, D. Weston, who showed promise in the few chances he was given. J. Taylor, the strong running centre three-quarters, used his few opportunities to good effect and near the end of the game showed initiative when he doubled round his wing three-quarters to make the extra man and score a good tr D. Fairbrother, who had impressed by his good display in the South Island B team the previous week, was again a reliable last line of defence, handling well and gaining long stretches of ground with his ■line-finders. He converted all three tries scored by his team. Of the forwards the bets two were the locks, J. Gallagher and T. Coughlan, who had played in All Black trials. L. A. Grant seemed to have lost much of the former interest he showed in the game and worked spasmodicaHy. P. Conroy and Di Craighead were sound workers all Canterbury backs seemed disorganised from the start and the big number of mistakes in handling detracted from what should have been a bright game. Occasionally J. Waine, first five-eighths, showed some of his true club form when he broke through the defence, but invariably his passes went astray. L. Johnsen, K. Davidson, and R. Bowick were always looking for the chances which did not come their way, and had they been given their right opportunities the result might easily have been different. At full-back, D. Mayo contributed another three points with a penalty goal, but his play was well below what is expected of the Old Boys Club full-back. *D. McCormick, No. 8 foward for Canterbury, was in the same category as D. A. Grant, of South Canterbury, and did not appear to be taking the game very seriously. The two Country forwards, D. McMillan and L. Davies, were the best of a lifeless pack, with S. Mitchell and R. Holland showing up on ° C Suth lS Canterbuiy won by 15 pointe (tries by Weston, Conroy, and Taylor, all converted by Fairbrother) to 6 points try by Davies and a penalty goal oy Mayo). , Mr W. Fright was referee. LOWER GRADES Third Grade.—Marist 14, Wellington Grade.— Canterbury 37, North C Linde? 1 7st 6 71b.—Sunnyside-Spreydon 17, Pleasant Point 3.
