DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING

RACING

MCLEAN STAKES WON BY HUSH MONEY

W. D. SKELTON RIDES THREE WINNERS

Hush Money’s briliant display of galloping to win the McLean Stakes and W. D. Skelton’s feat of riding three winners were the features of the racing on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Hush Money, the first filly raced by Mr A. N. Smith, vice-president and treasurer of the Dunedin club, toyed with her opponents, won easing up, yet ran the four furlongs in 48 l-ssec, which equalled the track record previously shared by Winning Flight, Brutus, and Silence. Hush Money, a half-sister to the smart North Island winner Cash, gave the English-bred Faux Tirage a successful start as a sire in New Zealand.

Hush Money was bred by Mr T. C. Lowry, Faux Tirage’s owner, and is trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson, who also prepared the good winners Ballochmyle and Coral Arc for Mr Smith. She- gave the Riccarton horsepian, A. J. Stokes, his first success in the race. The seven-year-old Trinidad, a good fourth at Ashburton a week earlier, had an overdue win in the Ranfurly Handicap, the first leg of the double. The Orari-trained Defaulter gelding was cleverly ridden by W. D. Skelton in a race spoilt by lack of pace for the first mile. Skelton stole a march on the others by putting a break on the field just after straightening up. Lancaster made a bold effort to close the gap to Trinidad, but after changing course he failed by a neck. Johnny Peep, another seven-year-old, decisively won the Telegraph Handicap, the second leg of the double, after being near the front all the way.

It was a well-deserved success after two good placings in stronger class at the National meeting. Johnny* Peep was ridden by R. J. Skelton, younger brother of W. D. Skelton, so their combined tally .was half the programme. There were 1026 tickets on the Trinidad-Johnny Peep combination, which paid £4O 18s for £l. The weather was brilliantly fine, the attendance good, and the track fast. The on-course totalisator turnover was £58.547, including £6210 10s on the double, compared with £58.705 10s last year. Trinidad’s Success Trinidad followed Diablo and Formation into the straight in the Ranfurly Handicap, dashed through a gap on the inner immediately alter, and quickly established a lead which the others could not close. Lancaster finished boldly from well back in the field and did well to run Trinidad to a neck in a race in which the pace did not go on until the last halfmile. Trinidad led early and was joined by Diablo going to the mile. W. D. Skelton eased Trinidad in behind Formation and Diablo in the next two furlongs, and he held that position to the home turn before he made his effort which carried him clear in a few strides. Lancaster was kept towards the tail of the field for the first seven furlongs so was placed at a disadvantage when the leaders quicked the pace in what had been a weak test of stamina. He changed course in the straight and there was much merit in his effort to run Trinidad so close. Diabllo battled on gamely right to the finish for third three-quarters of a length behind Lancaster. He appeared to have a good winning chance on the turn, but Trinidad and Lancaster came home better. Taj was beaten off in fourth place after having every chance. Formation, having his first race for Mr J. O. Douglass, was a moderate fifth, and Travesty faded to sixth after being well up to the straight. Mararoyal, the favourite, tailed off early and could make no improvement. Jonnny Peep’s Sprint Johnny Peep ran to the front at the half-mile in the Telegraph Handicap and shook off all challenges with little difficulty to win by a length and a half from Gold King, one of the lightly-backed runners. The consistent Delayed was two lengths back third. Johnny Peep was in the leading bunch from the start and displaced Gold King in front inside the first two furlongs. Johnny Peep was still galloping easily going to the furlong and Gold King’s challenge did not trouble him. Delayed had the Tun of the race behind

the leaders, but there was not enough dash about his final run to carry him to the front. He beat Social News by three-quarters of a length for third, the latter making up ground from the middle of the field. Deploy was a fair fifth. Kingship, the favourite, did not begin smartly and had only three horses behind him with half a furlong covered. He showed great speed to join Johnny Peep and Royal Mail in front on the home turn, but reached the end of his run soon after, fading to twelfth. Persian Gulf, the fifth favourite, took no part in the race. He was backing out at barrier-rise, then whipped round. Brilliant Riccarton Filly Hush Money, a strong favourite, worked clear inside the first furlong in the McLean Stakes, opened up a lead of three lengths on the home turn, and coasted home a length and a quarter clear of the handsome Southland colt, Mijiji. The others, beaten off a long way from the finish, were led home by Debited, another Riccarton candidate. Debited beat Ma Reine by a nose for third. Smartly and St. Ninian were slowest away. Hush Money showed her speed from the inside barrier position to lead past the three furlongs by a length and a half from Mijiji, which was followed by Debited, Golden Morn, Ma Reine, and The Boss. Hush Money, galloping effortlessly, widened her lead on the home turn and after that the others never looked like getting near her. Mijiji tried hard to bridge the gap but he could not match the Riccarton filly for speed. Debited and Ma Reine. the third and fourth to finish, were followed home three lengths back by Golden Morn and King’s Lace together. The Boss was three lengths back next. He showed speed from one of the outside barrier positions and he should win races for Mr J. P. O’Brien. Results:— SPRING HURDLES, Of £4OO. One mile and three-quarters. 1.
