LONDON. September 17. .Dai Rees, who first won the event 17 years ago. today reached the last eight m the “News of the World” match play championship at G*nton, by beating Harry Bradshaw and Harry Weetman in successive rounds. Now 40 Rees has recaptured much of his earlier brilliance ana fighting qualities. He beat Bradshaw 2 and 1. and finished 1 up on Weetman in the fourth round after a keen tussle. Fred Daly, present holder of the match play championship. sailed through today’s two rounds, easily beating Eric Lester. 5 and 4. and Arnold Stickley, 4 and 3. John Panton eliminated Arthur Lees in the morning, only to go out himself this afternoon to Max Faulkner, who beat the Scot 3 and 2. Faulkner now faces Eric Brown, who won the final threee holes to beat Jack Hargreaves 3 and 2 in the fourth round. The brilliant 23-year-old Bernard Hunt probably clinched his Ryder Cup place by beating R. Hastelow 1 up to enter the quarter-finals. Other fourth round matches resulted: S. S. Scott beat K. A. McDonald. 3 and 2; J. R. M. Jacobs beat D. Lewis. 5 and 4; R. Halsail beat E. Larne 1 up.
