MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FRIDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid. S.M.) FALSE ENTRY IN LEDGER A man, whose name was ordered not to be published in the meantime, pleaded guilty to a charge that with intent to defraud he made a false entry in a ledger card belonging to the firm where he was employed. He was remanded to September 25 for sentence, pending a report by the Probation Officer, and was allowed bail in his own recognisance of £5O on condition that he reports daily to the police. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Tate said that the accused owed £5O on an account and, when pressed to reduce it, falsified the account by putting in fictitious credits on the ledger card when the rest of the staff was absent. He had admitted passing false credits to a total of £9O. NEGLIGENTLY RIDING CYCLE Hugh James Kearns, aged 20, was fined £1 on a charge of riding his cycle negligently in Colombo street on July 22. Sergeant R. M. Schwass said he was aboard a tram which had just stopped to let some school children get off when he heard a crash. He had noticed a number of cyclists coming from behind the tram as three small girls were getting out of the rear door. He found that the defendant had struck one of the girls with his cycle. He fell off, but neither he nor the child was hurt, although the girl cried bitterly. Kearns had told him that his brakes were defective, said Sergeant Schwass. That was his only explanation for the accident. TRAFFIC CASES Offenders against the traffic regulations, prosecuted by the police, were fined as follows: Riding unlighted cycle: John Aoannou, £l. Falling to give way: Belinda Temple Williams, £2; Theodore Althuis, £3; Elsie Louise Millar, £2; Glenville Nicholson, £2; John Joseph Ryan, £3; Allan William Franklin, £3; John Rose Gillespie, £2; Ivan Frederick Chinnery, £2. No driver’s licence: Bruce Glanville Hamilton, 10s. No warrant of fitness: Bruce Lloyd, 10s. Driving without due care and attention: James Robson Clark, £3 (no warrant of fitness, 10s); John Robert Curtis, costs only; Alan Robert Dalton, £2.
