THE HEATHCOTE RIVER

Sir, —Your leading article on the Heathcote is to be commended. However, as one who has seen the river deteriorate to its present state over a 50-year period, it is quite plain there is no real remedy. As I stated some years ago when a new rubber works started and promptly used the river as a sewer, the only remedy is Parliamentary legislation to prevent trade waste being poured into any of our natur?< waterways. This would protect our rivers in the future. This pollution goes on in many other parts of New Zealand; the Heathcote proves that local authorities are not capable of handling the job.—Yours, etc., WILLIAM GRAHAM. September 18, 1953.
