MR NIXON’S VISIT TO N.Z.

(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 17. The Vice-President of the United States (Mr Richard Nixon) announced today that he will leave Washington in a special aircraft on October 6 on a 72-day goodwill tour of 15 Pacific and Asian countries.

The journey will include New Zealand and all the free Asian nations from Japan to Afghanistan. He said the purpose of the journey would be to win goodwill among the Far Eastern nations, and to learn. Mr Nixon, who will be accompanied by Mrs Nixon, members of his staff, State Department officials and reporters, will arrive in Wellington on October 12. He has asked that the Itinerary should include Auckland as well as Wellington. He will arrive in Sydney on October 15.

A Press Association message from Wellington said that Mr Nixon will visit New Zealand from October 12 to 15. The Prime Minister. Mr Holland, announced yesterday that New Zealand is to be the first call in an extensive goodwill tour. “It gives us the greatest pleasure to be able to welcome the Vice-President and his wife to this country,” said Mr Holland. This would be the first time a Vice-President of the United States had visited New Zealand. The Vice-President and his party will arrive by Constellation aircraft at Ohakea at 8.45 a.m. on October 12. They will leave Auckland for Australia on October 15. While in Wellington, Mr and Mrs Nixon will stay at Government House as the guests of the Governor-Gen-eral (Sir Willoughby Norrie) and Lady Norrie. Mr Nixon will meet the Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers shortly after his arrival. . On Tuesday. October 13, he will be the guest of honour at a State luncheon to be held in the social hall of Parliament Buildings. Later that afternoon he will visit Parliament while it is in session. On the Wednesday the Vice-President and his party will leave Wellington by air for Auckland. The Vice-President’s party will include Mr Christian Herter, jun. (executive assistant), Miss Rose Mary Woods (personal assistant), a Naval aide, an Air Force aide (the pilot of the Constellation) a military aide, State Department officers, and newspapermen. . •
