RAILWAY WAGES IN BRITAIN

INCREASE CLAIMS REJECTED LONDON, September 16. Two big railway wages claims which would have cost about £40.000,000 a year to meet have been rejected by the Railways Executive. One was for an all-round increase of 15 per cent, for 500,000 railwaymen, and the other for a similar increase for 100.000 railway shopmen. . The “Yorkshire Post says the railwaymen will pursue their claim through the industry’s highest negotiating machinery—the Railways Staff National Tribunal. “Executive spokesmen warned unions that British Railways could not afford increases,” says the newspaper. “They said another pay increase might threaten the present goods and passenger charge level, and lead to another application for a fares increase.”
