ATOM CANNON FOR FAR EAST
(Rec. 8 PJP.) NEW YORK, Sept. 16. The United States will strengthen its Far East defences with atomic artillery. Beater's diplomatic correspondent learned today. This followed a Defence Department announcement yesterday that a battalion of six new 280mlUlmetre atomic cannon would soon go to Europe to support the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation armies. “We are sending atomic artillery to Europe, where there la only a ‘cold war,’" a spokesman said. “It would Surely not be sensible If we did not have slfch weapons available in the *hot war* area of the Far East”
