SUBDIVISION IN GREEN BELT

TWO ACRE BLOCKS PROPOSED

DECISION DEFERRED BY HALSWELL COUNCIL

“One could say without hesitation that two-acre subdivisions are not favoured by this council,’’ said Mr James Mackenzie, chairman of the Halswell County Council, when the council yesterday received an application for approval of the subdivision into 50 two-acre blocks of the property of Mr Karl Scott on Halswell road. The land is in the green belt. A surveying firm wrote that this was a rural subdivision, which would be possible only if the 45 chains long 66ft road of rural standard was permitted.

The chairman said that very few connected with town planning would agree that subdivision into two-acre blocks was a good thing. This was the first application for permit for «uch a subdivision of land in the green belt. Mr L. S. Smart had proposed to subdivide into two acre blocks on one property but had altered the plans to provide for sections of 30 perches. Cr. T. Williamson: All that the blocks are is a horse paddock at the back of the house. It is a waste of land to have one house instead of four. “Have we any power to stop it?” asked Cr. H. Cox. • The chairman: Yes, I think you have. The council decided to hold the application over for further consideration. The Waimairi County Council last evening decided that where subdivisions take place the necessary contribution towards the formation of road widening and footpaths be requested in all Cases. ' '
