APPRENTICES’ PAY

COURT REFUSES TO ORDER INCREASE

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 17. The Court of Arbitration, in a majority decision, has declined to make an order increasing the rate of pay of apprentices. Judge Stilwell, in his judgment, said that the apprentice had not lost ground with youth rates since 1945.

The Court heard applications from the Federation of Labour on behalf of apprentices generally, and the New Zealand Carpenters? and Joiners’ Union for apprentices in that industry. Mr F. C. Allerby, the workers’ nominee on the Court, dissented from the judgment. He said that some increases should have been awarded, especially in the earlier periods of apprenticeship. Industry could without undue hardship pay a rate to apprentices more in keeping with present-day needs.
