WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Farnassus.—Mrs Wilkinson presided at the July meeting of the Parnassus Country Women’s Institute, and welcomed Mrs Wright and Miss Hernott to the meeting. Arrangements were made for the institutes twenty-first birthday parly to be held on October 20. Mrs Leaman won the wandering shilling, and the "Golden thread" was read by Nirs Stevenson. Results of competitions w-ere as follows: knitted bedsocks for Jubilee Home: Mrs Stevenson 1, Mrs Walton 2. Floating saucer of flowers: Mis Fitzgibbon 1, Mrs Dalton 2. lempleton.—The July meeting of the Templeton Country Women's Institute was hmd in the hall where Mrs Simpson presided over a fair attendance of members. It was decided to give a donation to the federation gift to Queen Elizabeth on her visit to New Zealand. The gift will be a donation to the Restoration Fund of Westminster Abbey. It was also decided to give a parcel of clothes to the Methodist Central Mission. It was reported that members are taking part in the doll dressing competition which is held in Christchurch in August in aid of “Save the Children Fund”. An invitation to Springston Institute birthday party was accepted. A parcel of books and cards for the farm school was acknowledged. Mrs Simpson was in charge of the social half hour programme. Glentunnel.—The twenty-second birthday of the Glentunnel Women’s Institute pleasantly celebrated recently, when members entertained their friends from surrounding districts at an afternoon function. Mrs L. Searle (president) welcomed the guests. The Sheffield drama group and the Glentunnel drama club presented two plays. Items were also contributed by Miss J. Morrison, Mrs Kennedy. Mrs Cridge, Mrs Rhodes, and Mrs Cabe. Greetings were extended by members from the Lake Coleridge Coalgate, and Sheffield Women’s Institutes, the Canterbury Executive Committee and Hororata and Glenroy Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Sumner.—There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Sumner Country Women's Institute held recently in the Methodist Hall, Sumner. The president, (Mrs P. T. Mauger.) welcomed a new member and several visitors. Mrs Baldwin reported that the arts and crafts circle had enrolled new members and that baskets were being made. Mrs Wilkinson, of Mairehau, gave an interesting demonstration on Italian quilting. A competition for a soft toy was won by Mrs S. Nicholson 1, Mrs M. Mauger 2, Mrs D. Watson .3. Mr J. Coombe and Mr M. G. Baumgart demonstrated thp pruning of fruit trees, berries and of roses. The training of espalier fruit trees was also explained. Lincoln.—At the August meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute presided over by Mrs Moir, a bring and buy sale was held to raise funds for the Federation. It proved quite successful. B Shipley gave a report on a meeting held at Sheffield, regarding the sponsoring of children under I th ?. CMWren Fund. It was decided to hold a bring and buy at the September meeting proceeds to go to the Flower Fund. Interest was shown in the home permanent waving demonstration given by Mrs L. F. Gough.
