NEW WORLD WEIGHTLIFTING RECORDS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, Aug. 29. Thomas Kono (United States) set a new world record for the jerk with 168.5 kilogrammes (about 3721 b) at the world weight-lifting championships at Stockholm today.

Kono also set new figures for the clean press and jerk, with a total G-f 408.5 kilogrammes. (about 9021 b). The previous jerk record was held by Peter George (United States). 164.5 kilogrammes, and clean press and jerk by Stan Stanczyk (United States), with 405 kilogrammes. Officials later said the jerk record of 168.5 kilogrammes would stand, but the clean press and jerk total wou'd be 407.5 kilogrammes and not 408.5. The reason was that new records are only ratified in units of 2.5 kilogrammes.

Another world record was broken when A. Vorovyev. of the Soviet Union, raised 136 kilogrammes (299j1b) in the light heavy-weight championship snatch. This beat his own previous world record of 135 kilogrammes. Vorovyev went on to set a world record for the combined press, snatch and jerk, with 430 kilogrammes (94711 b The previous record was 425 kilogrammes, set by another Ryssian, Novak.

George set a new world record in winning the world light heavy-weight weightlifting championship last night. He lifted a total of 370 kilogrammes (81511 b compared with the previous world record of 367.5 kilogrammes (8101 b held by Stanczyk.

FAST TIME FOR 5000METRES IN BERLIN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 29. Gordon Pirie (Britain) won the 5000 metres at the Britain-Germany athletic meeting in Berlin today, covering the distance in 14min 2.6 sec. This was 4sec faster than the Olympic record, established at Helsinki last year by Emil Zatopek (Czechoslovakia), but fell short of the world record, of 13min 58.2 sec, held by Gundar Haegg (Sweden).
