BOXING
TOURNAMENT AT KAIKOURA
The second amateur boxing tournament of the 1953 season was held by the Kaikoura Sports Club in the Drill Hall on Saturday evening. Boxers from Nelson, Blenheim, Picton, Christchurch, and Kaikoura took part, and the programme comprised 13 bouts. Special prizes were awarded as follows:—Most scientific local boxer under 16 years, Austin Smith; best local boxer, Ivan Wratt. The referees were Messrs L. C. Cotter (Blenheim) and J. G. Latter (Kaikoura); the judges, Messrs L. C. Thomas and A. Moys (Kaikoura); the timekeepers, Messrs W. A Ferry and A. T. Stove.
Results were as follows, boxers being from Kaikoura unless otherwise stated:— P. Sweeney (sst 61b) beat Ross Smith (sst); Austin Smith (6st 41b) beat J. Gibellene (Nelson) (6st 81b); C. Wratt (sst 81b) beat H. Fearn (Blenheim) (6st); N. Chandler (Picton) (sst 61b) beat B. Harnett (sst 61b); M. Norton (Picton) (Bst 41b) beat C. Ross (Christchurch) (Bst 61b); R. Arthur (sst 6lb) beat R. McDonald (sst 71b); P. Fletcher (6st 51b) beat T. Maffey (Blenheim) (6st 51b); A. McDonald (Picton) (9st 21b) beat J. Fearn (Blenheim) (9st 21b); W. Shaw (Christchurch) (7st 131 b) beat T. Broughton (Blenheim (Bst 21b); G. Shaw (Christchurch) (9st 71b) beat R. Adams (Nelson) (9st 71b); I. Wratt (7st 131 b) beat C. Nesbitt (Blenheim) (Bst 31b); M. Smith (6st 81b) beat J. Wilson (Picton) (6st 71b); J. Norton (Picton) (Bst 101 b) beat W. King (Christchurch) (Bst 101 b).
