SPEED IN BUILT-UP AREAS
Sir,—The automobile associations seem to be in danger of losing their reputation for responsibility and good sense. Are they speaking for roadhogs or for normal, decent citizens when they ask for the lifting of speed limits in built-up areas? And all to what purpose? So that motorists travelling the 230 miles between Christchurch and Dunedin will not be put to the outrageous trouble of slowing down to 30 miles an hour over 34.4 miles of this road. Does this involve such an inordinate loss of time? Or is it too much trouble for motorists to keep a look-out for either re-
striction signs or for the people who also have some rights to the use of the road in built-up areas?—Yours, etc., MOTORIST. August 29, 1953.
