JAPAN'S ARMY STRENGTH
INCREASE PLANNED NEXT YEAR (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) TOKYO, August 29. Japan will increase the strength of her embryo army by between 20,000 and 40,000 men next year, to replace the American security troops now stationed in Japan, the Deputy-Premier (Mr Taketora Ogata) announced last night.
Mr Ogata said that the present strength, 110.000 Japanese troops, would be raised to 130,000 or 150,000.
He said the decision to strengthen Japan’s defence had been made independently by the Japanese Government. The decision had not been influenced by the recent visit of the United States Secretary of State (Mr John Foster Dulles).
