LANCASTER PARK

Sir, —Your leading article dealing with Lancaster Park should help to clear the air for sports, games, etc. The dog-in-the-manger policy will strengthen the opposition to Rugby and the movement will grow as League and Soccer advance. The park was saved by the people for the people. No one sport should, dogmatise if it wishes to hold public opinion. What happened 34 years ago will have to be brought up to date. The park should be in the hands of the Christchurch City Council. If a fighting fund is needed I will support it by a sum of £s.—Yours, etc., FERN LEAF. July 18, 1953.

Sir,—As “All Gold” says, League has the answer by taking a leaf out of Auckland’s book on promoting the code. Carlaw Park was a swamp and only hard work has made that park what it is today. The Canterbury League had an even better chance, Monica Park, as I knew it, was m great order in 1929. Why have they allowed it to go to pieces? It had seating for 10,000 to 12,000, and with the right people at the head I would say they would not be worrying about Lancaster Park today. The League could take another leaf out of the hockey officials’ book. That is why they are so big today. Williamson Park, their headquarters now, will have all games, overseas or otherwise, played there—Yours, etc., EYES OPENED. July 18, 1953.
