CAR ENGULFED BY SAND

PARTS RECOVERED AT MURIWAI

ANOTHER TRAPPED ON SUNDAY

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20.

Mr D. L. Reed, with 20 helpers, yesterday recovered parts of his powerful pre-war American car from the sands of Muriwai Beach. They will be sold for scrap.. The car was caught in the wet sands of the beach 10 days ago. A salvage attempt the previous week-end failed. Yesterday, after four hours’ digging, a wrecking truck was brought in to haul out the car, but the sands had too firm a grip.

With the tide swirling in it was decided to break pp the car. Helpers worked waist-deep in water to salvage parts. Mr Reed, who is building a home at Titirangi, intended to sell the car to help to pay for the house. The parts salvaged should bring £2OO. The car was valued at £6OO and was not insured.

Two more cars were trapped on the beach yesterday. One was freed, but the other was in the sand up to the running-boards by 3.30 p.m. A spokesman for the Automobile Association said today it would put signposts on the beach if it were asked. “We’ve warned motorists,’? he added, “but they still go on the beach.”
